Family Business Magazine Recognizes OCA Members

Anderson Concrete Corp.’s Jessica P. Anderson and Armstrong Steel Erectors Inc.’s Amy Hall have been named to Family Business Magazine’s 2023 list of Transformational Women in Family Business.

The national list showcases exemplary leaders who are preserving their families’ legacies while propelling their businesses into the future.

Anderson was named company president in 2021, the year Anderson Concrete celebrated the 100th anniversary of her great grandfather founding the company. Anderson Concrete is one of three related businesses owned by the family. Anderson started working for one of them, Buckeye Ready-Mix, during college. “I fell in love with the culture and the people in this industry and I never left,” she said. “I love how down-to-earth all the people are. Everybody is incredibly hardworking, genuine and authentic.”

Hall, who served as 2019 OCA President, began in the construction business and family company, Ebony Construction, upon her father’s passing in 2003. According to the magazine’s profile on Hall, “At Ebony, she learned the business — and made it grow. She became active in professional groups, becoming the first woman of color to serve as board chair for the Ohio Contractors Association and on the board of the Associated General Contractors of America.

“I’ve been so fortunate that an industry that historically has not had a lot of women and women of color in it has been extremely good for myself, my company, my family and all of our employees,” said Hall, who in August 2022 purchased Armstrong Steel Erectors with her oldest son.

Chosen by a panel of Family Business editorial staff members and advisers, the 2023 Transformational Women in Family Business honorees come from both coasts of the U.S. and in between as CEOs, presidents or directors.

OHIO MACHINERY’S TAYLOR RECEIVES CORPORATE AWARD

Ohio Machinery Company President Ken Taylor is the 2023 recipient of the Malden Mills Corporate Kindness Award given by the Values-in-Action Foundation.

The foundation’s annual award recognizes local, national and international community leaders, businesses and educators for promoting kindness, care and respect to students and adults for a better society.

Taylor, a third generation family leader of Ohio Machinery, carries on the business’ and Taylor family’s legacy and tradition of philanthropy. Ohio Machinery has a legacy of charitable giving and supporting education, professional sports and entertainment and local community development across Ohio. Through strategic financial gifts, equipment donations and the creation of academic scholarships, the company provides support to form pathways that help shape the future, fostering a richer quality of life for all.

“Ken Taylor is a unique CEO who leads with heart and runs his family enterprise with ‘employees’ as extended family, said Values-in-Action Foundation President/CEO Stuart Muszynski. “He follows in the method of leadership exemplified by the late Aaron Feuerstein, CEO of Malden Mills, who paid his 3,500 textile mill employees full wages and benefits after a devastating fire in 1995 that destroyed most of the mill. And that is why we at the Values-in-Action Foundation are thrilled to recognize Ken Taylor and Ohio CAT with our Malden Mills Corporate Kindness Award.”

“The spirit of kindness and generosity is an example I want to set for my family and my employees, and is a tenet of our business,” said Taylor, who joined the company in 1988. “Giving truly helps communities transform, and it impacts people and their futures in the communities we serve.”

A more than 75-year-old company, Ohio Machinery has more than 40 locations, employing nearly 1,700 people. The company’s premium dealer brands include Ohio CAT, Ohio Peterbilt, Ohio Ag Equipment, Complete Hydraulic Component Service, Complete Diesel Component Service and more.
